Business Website or Online Store? How to Choose

· Sarabi.Cloud

A showcase website presents your business and brings in enquiries: calls, emails, quote requests. An online store sells directly: the customer picks, pays and waits for the parcel. If your customers talk to you before they buy, you almost always need a showcase site. If they buy alone in two minutes from their phone, you need an online store.

"Can you make me a website?" is the sentence that hides two different jobs in plenty of quotes. The cousin who "does websites" says yes to everything, then once it's done you find out there was never a shopping cart. Here you'll see how to tell the two apart, what each costs to keep alive. You'll also see when it's smarter not to sell online, at least for now.

Showcase website vs online store: what is the difference?

According to TeamSystem, a showcase site is a "virtual business card": it presents products and services but doesn't let people pay online. An online store adds a catalogue, a cart, a payment system and order tracking.

The difference that really matters is daily work. You publish a showcase site and touch it up now and then. An online store is a real store: orders to fulfil, stock to keep in sync, customers writing "where's my parcel?" at eleven at night.

When is a showcase website enough?

It is enough when customers want to talk to you before they buy. That's the case for quote-based services, for professionals and for local businesses that need to be found and called.

Hypothetical example: an electrician in your town. Nobody buys "an electrical system" with a credit card at two in the morning. They search "electrician near me", read a couple of lines, check the reviews and phone. For him an online store would be a cost with no customers. He needs a clear showcase site with services, working area, visible contacts and good local SEO (optimisation to be found in your own area).

If you only have one initiative in mind, such as a campaign or a course, even less may do: a landing page, a page with a single goal.

When do you really need an online store?

You need one when you have a catalogue with clear prices and customers can choose alone. If you already get messages like "how much is this? do you ship?", the signal is there. A store also makes sense when you want to sell to people far from your area, because the shop on your street is no longer enough.

Mind the flip side: if those messages don't exist, an online store is an empty counter on a street with no passers-by. Beautiful, well lit, deserted.

How much does an online store cost compared with a showcase site?

TeamSystem puts a showcase site anywhere from "a few hundred euros" to "a few thousand", depending on platform, layout, number of pages and features. For an online store it speaks of a higher initial investment and higher running costs: product updates, order handling, customer support. It gives no precise figures for the store, which is a good reason to distrust anyone who quotes you one over the phone without asking what you sell.

For online stores, according to our Sarabi.Cloud websites page, our model has fees below market rates plus a little percentage of the sales the site generates. In short: if the store doesn't sell, we lose out too. For details, write to us.

What are the legal duties of selling online?

An online store has rules that a showcase site doesn't. According to Sendcloud, the duties include clear information on price, features, delivery times and delivery costs before purchase, prices that include VAT, a right of withdrawal within 14 days of delivery with a dedicated form, a privacy notice and a cookie banner, plus measures to protect personal data. TeamSystem adds that an online store, since it handles sensitive data, needs advanced security services.

Before opening, have these points checked against the legal texts or by an accountant. This is a starting list, not legal advice.

Black Friday 2026: does it make sense to open a store now?

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27. Cyber Monday follows on Monday, November 30, as Skuola.net reports. The date creates a rush. The rush creates stores with half-empty product pages, shipping still to be decided and the withdrawal form forgotten.

Hypothetical example: a small winery that already gets messages like "can you send me six bottles?". It makes sense to start with a lean store: ten products, well-shot photos, shipping decided before opening. Opening with a hundred products and no plan for returns is the fastest way to hate Black Friday.

If you don't sell anything online yet, a solid showcase site with a good enquiry form is a healthier first step. The store can come later, with the numbers worked out.

Is there a middle road?

Yes. Start with a well-made showcase site, with products or services described and a form to ask for information or place an order. If requests come in, move to a cart. That way you pay for complexity only when you need it. Ask whoever builds the site, from day one, whether the structure can grow: it's the question that saves you from starting over.

Frequently asked questions

If I already have social media, do I need a showcase website? Usually yes. A social profile is rented space, with rules someone else can change. The website is yours, shows up on Google and tells people who you are even if they don't follow you.

Can I move from a showcase site to an online store later? Often yes, if whoever builds the site plans for it from the start. Ask before you sign.

Does an online store sell by itself? No: a store that is opened and forgotten stays still. You need well-described products, a way to be found and someone who answers customers.

How do I know which one I need? Ask how your customers buy today. If they call you first, start with a showcase site. If they choose alone, consider a store.
